US bank ownership chains are shallow. Most FDIC-insured banks and their holding companies sit at the top of their own reporting group with no further parent, and the deepest fully-attested chains for a real operating bank run 4 hops / 5 tiers from the insured bank up to a global ultimate parent (a handful of 6–7 hop GLEIF chains turn out to be securitization trusts/SPVs, not core banking entities).
Foreign banking organizations (FBOs) collectively sit atop roughly 17.0% of total US banking system assets as of Q1 2026 ($4.87T of $28.68T), per the Federal Reserve's IBA release — 4.8 points via US-chartered bank subsidiaries with a genuine ownership chain, and 12.2 points via direct branches/agencies, which are legally the same entity as the foreign parent bank (zero ownership layers, not a subsidiary at all). By entity count rather than asset share, foreign ownership is much rarer: only 40 of 420 (9.5%) US bank-named GLEIF entities that report any parent at all report a foreign ultimate parent — asset share is concentrated in a few very large FBOs (Santander, TD, HSBC, Deutsche Bank, Barclays, ICBC, MUFG) each running one or a few large US subsidiaries.
Walked hop-by-hop through ref.current_gleif_parents (IS_DIRECTLY_CONSOLIDATED_BY); GLEIF's own declared IS_ULTIMATELY_CONSOLIDATED_BY edge for HSBC Bank USA points straight to HSBC Holdings plc, matching this chain's endpoint.

ref.current_gleif_parents / ref.current_gleif_entities (GLEIF Golden Copy, 2026-07-31 publish) — ownership-chain walk and foreign-ultimate-parent counts computed livelegal_name ILIKE '%bank%'/'%bancorp%'/'%bancshares%', US-domiciled, active), not a resolved canonical entity set — this both over-matches (a few securitization trusts) and under-matches (subsidiaries not sharing a name with the parent, e.g. many thrifts, are excluded).
